Une anthologie 1947-1956. Frère aîné du batteur Elvin Jones et du compositeur et trompettiste Thad Jones, Hank est un pianiste auquel il faut donner d'urgence la place qu'il mérite, au sommet, à hauteur de géants comme Art Tatum ou Bud Powell. Du premier, il fut celui qui assuma le plus justement et le plus profondément l'héritage harmonique. Du second, il sut retenir la rigueur et la variété rythmiques. Hank fut l'accompagnateur de tous les grands, d'Ella Fitzgerald au saxophoniste Joe Lovano. On n'oublie pas de l'aimer tout autant en solo qu'en trio, en compagnie de grands contrebassistes, de Wendell Marshall à Ron Carter et d'immenses batteurs, de Kenny Clarke à Tony Williams... Se souvenir enfin que le mot ''élégance'' fut inventé pour lui. Piano duets have the potential danger of getting overcrowded and a bit incoherent, but neither happens on this rather delightful set. Hank Jones and Tommy Flanagan, two of the four great jazz pianists (along with Barry Harris and Roland Hanna) to emerge from Detroit in the '40s and '50s, have similar styles and their mutual respect is obvious. Their renditions of seven superior bop standards (including "Jordu," "Confirmation" and Thad Jones' "A Child Is Born") plus an alternate take of "Robbins Nest" on this CD reissue are tasteful, consistently swinging and inventive within the tradition. ~ AllMusic

Favors is a live recording from May 1996 of a Hank Jones recital in Osaka, Japan. Six cuts feature the trio work of pianist Jones, bassist George Mraz, and drummer Dennis Mackrel. The remaining five tracks augment the group with the Osaka College of Music's Winds Jazz Orchestra. Hank Jones' rich musical career has spanned over fifty years; his playing synthesizes important elements of many of the influential pianists in jazz history, from Art Tatum and Erroll Garner to Bud Powell and Bill Evans. Most significantly, Jones has fused these varied sources into a wholly personal style characterized by an almost orchestral approach to arrangement and harmony, a silvery touch, and masterful attention to detail. Favors is meticulously recorded and features thoughtful arrangements of six jazz standards, as well as two Hank Jones compositions. The performance of the title track, written by Claus Ogerman, is exemplary of trio playing at its most elegant. The larger ensemble arrangements by Katsuhiko Tanaka effectively frame the subtle piano work of this consummate jazz artist. Having actually experienced over half a century of the evolution of jazz piano, Jones beautifully consolidates qualities of stride, swing and bebop with more recent harmonic developments.
