"Soul jazz" first became popular in the early '60s. Incorporating a deep R&B feel and heavy doses of the blues, musicians such as Stanley Turrentine and Gene Harris' Three Sounds were successful practitioners of this down-home sound. This Blue Note two-disc set collects two 1960 sessions that saw these giants collaborating on some of the most soulful music of the era. BLUE HOUR conjures images of a smoky club in the wee hours of the morning, when these funky blues masters would just be hitting their stride.
As to be expected, melancholy melodies like "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You," "Since I Fell For You," and "Willow Weep For Me," all handled soulfully by Turrentine, are at their bluesy best. What's surprising is the bouncing swing of classics like "Just in Time," "Alone Together," and even a sizzling "Strike Up the Band," which displays the quartet's ability to both groove and burn at the same time. Of special note is a swinging read of "There is No Greater Love" that features a nimble Gene Harris at his peak. ~Cd_universe
